Version 20250520
For Indigenous peoples, ethnic minorities, and residents of remote areas who have long endured the harms of uranium mining, nuclear power plant operations, and nuclear waste dumping, the seizure and contamination of their lands must be recognized as both a cultural and material form of genocide. Remedial actions must not be limited to financial compensation, but must actively restore land rights, provide comprehensive healthcare, and initiate full-scale ecological rehabilitation.
Nuclear Power is not a wise alternative for people and the planet. Nuclear energy destroys ecosystems and endangers the health of both current and future generations. The only viable path forward in response to the climate emergency is a swift transition to renewable energy. This transition must be based on justice. A transition that respects the rights and voices of local communities, especially Indigenous tribes, and avoids all forms of harm and injustice.
Nuclear power is neither clean, safe, affordable, nor renewable. Even if it emits less carbon than fossil fuels, it cannot be accepted as a climate solution. Instead it is a problem of climate change due to climate related risks such as sea level rise and multiple climate catastrophe. The full nuclear lifecycle—including radioactive emissions, thermal pollution, and long-lived radioactive waste—poses far greater harm to life on Earth. than disaster induced by climate change greenhouse gases alone.
With the rise of 2025 net-zero goal and global climate change concerns, proponents of nuclear power are using the argument that “nuclear energy is a low-carbon energy source” to suppress anti-nuclear voices. We call on the anti-nuclear movement to strengthen its arguments and resist stigmatization.
Asian countries must remain vigilant regarding the rapid expansion of nuclear energy across the region, to ensure energy security, environmental protection, and the wellbeing of future generations.
The connection between nuclear power and nuclear weapons remains strong. Both pose severe threats to the environment, regional stability, and global peace.
The decommissioning of the nuclear reactors that have reached the end of their operational life should be subject to continuous, independent, and vigorous oversight, including land decontamination, radiation monitoring, and nuclear waste management.
Nuclear facilities located in active seismic zones must enhance nuclear safety monitoring and undertake timely seismic upgrades to minimize the risks posed by earthquakes.
We strongly condemn the Chinese Nationalist Party (KMT) and the Taiwan People’s Party for disregarding public safety and democratic procedures through opaque, ‘black-box’ legislative actions. We believe that Taiwan lacks the natural and social conditions necessary for developing nuclear power, oppose the reopening of aging nuclear power plants, and urge the Taiwanese government to uphold the principle of nuclear safety first and to realize a nuclear-free homeland.
We urge the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to fulfill its responsibility to provide a comprehensive and objective analysis of the development, advantages, and risks of Small Modular Reactors (SMRs).
We support local communities in Indonesia in opposing the Indonesian government’s plan to build its first nuclear power plant and advocate for the development of locally-based renewable energy.
We call on all governments and international institutions to acknowledge, support, and compensate radiation victims—especially those in Australia, India, the South Pacific, China, Mongolia, Russia, Taiwan, and Japan—who have suffered from uranium mining, nuclear waste dumping, and nuclear weapons testing.
We express deep concern over the escalating tensions between India and Pakistan and the potential risk of nuclear warfare arising from their conflict.
We are concerned about the Philippine government’s active promotion of nuclear energy and its signing of nuclear cooperation agreements with countries including the United States, South Korea, France, and China.
We are troubled by the Japanese government’s post-Fukushima nuclear policy shifts—from the original goal of “zero nuclear power by 2030,” to merely “reducing nuclear power,” and now to fully “reviving nuclear energy and planning the construction of new nuclear power plants.” We express our support for the Japanese public’s anti-nuclear movements.
We urge the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to take leadership and persuade countries located on active fault lines—especially India, Taiwan, and Turkey—to abandon nuclear energy projects, and to learn from the devastating lessons of earthquake-induced disasters such as the Fukushima nuclear crisis.
We call on all sectors and governments worldwide to identify, assist, and compensate victims of radiation exposure and contamination.
